The Memory of Grapes

This work began when a friend gave me several thousand sheets of black and white photo paper from the 1970s. The paper was slightly fogged and not really suitable for enlarging, so I began to think about photograms.

My brother Rob died in December 2014. He was a wine maker and that spring I made a few photograms from his vine cuttings for a commemorative label for his last batch of wine.

I have returned to his vineyard in the years since. Standing among his grape vines I think about how, like the blue heron flying overhead, the grapes return every spring. Even in his absence.

The original photograms are 11” X 14”. The diptychs are 14” X 22”. Archival inkjet prints from the originals are available in varying sizes.
